Following the outage that affected all of Facebook’s sites, it was reported that around 1.5 billion Facebook users’ private and personal data was found on sale on a hacker forum.
Indeed, it was found out that the data was allegedly obtained by scraping publicly available data shared by Facebook users and not by breaking into the company’s systems. The data on sale can then be used to compromise users’ security and privacy as it includes names, email addresses, location, gender, phone numbers, and Facebook User ID information.
As this information could be exploited, it has been taken down from the forum but it is still unknown if it ended up somewhere else or even how many buyers may have already purchased some of it. The data found seemed to be legitimate and could then constitute one of the biggest Facebook data dumps to date.
