AI software to identify oesophageal cancer earlier

It was recently found out that one of the NHS’s leading hospital trust had started to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) software to help identify signs of oesophageal cancer.

Indeed, this type of cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer as it is hard to detect and lots of people often die soon after the diagnosis. This is why experts from University College London hospital and University College London (UCL) have started to work on the software CADU.

The software is then able to analyse pictures captured inside a patient’s throat during an endoscopy, where the cancer is first seen. The AI software aims to reduce the number of oesophageal cancers by identifying early signs of the disease and acting to treat the patient effectively. This should help increase the chances of survival of the patients.

It was then reported that the University College London hospital trust started to use CADU in February after it was approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.
