It was recently reported that Canada, the U.S., and five other Pacific-rim countries will be developing international rules to bridge data protection and privacy.

Indeed, the new Global Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) Forum will create international cross-border privacy rules and privacy recognition for processors (PRP) systems, which will be regulated through an international certification system. This aims to help companies apply compliance with international data privacy standards.

There are however some complaints about why the framework only applies to seven countries, even though it plans to extend further after its implementation. It was also reported that the system should be underpinned by high data protection standards to ensure the complexity of trans-border data flows and privacy.
