Facebook has recently announced that it wouldn’t be using facial recognition software in order to identify faces in photographs and videos.
Indeed, Facebook, which is the world’s largest social media network, has recently been under a lot of pressure from regulators and politicians regarding privacy, racial bias, and ethics of facial recognition tech. Following the growing concerns and criticism the company received, it has then decided to put a stop to the software. Until now, users were able to use an option that would scan their face in pictures so that they can be notified if someone else post a picture of them on the platform.
The year before, the company had settled a long-running legal dispute about the way it scans and tags photos. Facebook finally agreed to pay £421m to a group of users in Illinois who said that the facial recognition tool was in violation of the state’s privacy laws.
