The first electric-powered aircraft in Scotland had its first test flight in Orkney in order to use greener technologies.
Indeed, the Ampaire test flight began its tests trial from Kirkwall Airport and is the only hybrid-electric airplane flying at the moment. The plane was retrofitted with a large battery pack that can last hours and one of the twin engines on the plane has been replaced with an electric motor.
Although it will start by doing short-haul, it aims to go into media and then long-haul. By doing these changes, the airplane will fly cleaner, be more efficient, and be more economical.
There is also the idea of using green hydrogen to de-carbonize aviation. For this project to go ahead, the EMEC, the European Marine Energy Centre, is working alongside ZeroAvia in the Cotswolds.
