Although the tech industry is growing in the UK, the country is falling behind regarding the number of women in STEM careers.
Indeed, a recent study by The International Labour Organisation showed that the UK only had two-fifths of women working in STEM, which puts it 10% behind others countries. It is then vital that IT leaders prioritise diverse STEM hires and engage with women in the sector.
Having female role models and women in senior leadership positions would also increase the opportunities to have a more diverse and inclusive workplace. As of now, only 5% of leadership positing in tech are being held by women and so, a lack of representation could be a factor in the shortage of women in STEM roles.
However, it was also reported that the number of women in STEM has been slowly rising in the past six months as well as online searches for women working in science, tech, engineering, and math sectors.
