UK government announced new initiative to shape global standards for AI

The  UK government recently announced a new initiative that will be shaping global technical standards for Artificial Intelligence.

Indeed, the Alan Turing Institute, supported by the British Standards Institution (BSI) and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), will be in charge of this AI Standard Hub. This initiative will aim to develop practical tools for business in order to bring the UK’s AI community together as well as help companies benefit from global standards through a new online platform.

By doing so, the UK hopes to advance in and keep leading this developing area. To achieve that, the Hub will focus on improving the governance of AI, complementing pro-innovation regulation, and benefitting from the economic potential of these technologies that will reinforce investment and employment in the UK.

Moreover, the Hub will receive the expertise of the BSI, the UK National Standards Body, and NPL, to help develop standards and research, as well as of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) and the Office for AI (OAI).

Before its launch, there will be a series of roundtables with various companies that will be led by The Alan Turing Institute to shape the Hub’s activities.
